The Lower East Side
I think Bloomberg has done a lot of good, but the city has gotten so much more expensive under him. Rents are ridiculous, just ridiculous. I don’t know what he could have done about that, but I’m sure he could have done something as a businessman. Right now the only places anyone can afford are so far out they may as well not even be in the city. It’s enough to make people want to move away.
I think he’s been a good mayor! I didn’t like how he gave himself a third term, but the city is safe and the economy is getting better from what I can tell. Plus, I think the government should help people, and I think his has. I like that he got smoking out of bars, and I even wish his Big Gulp thing had passed. Bloomberg is certainly smarter than most of the people in this city, I can tell you that much.
He’s certainly better than Giuliani. I know a lot of people like Giuliani because crime fell under him, but I didn’t live here when crime was high, so I only know him as a jerk. I don’t think Bloomberg is a jerk, but I do think he could have been better on stop and frisk. That’s the big thing I don’t like about him. And the thing about him being rich: he doesn’t know anyone who would be stopped, so he doesn’t care. Otherwise, I think the city has done some good stuff under him, like the High Line.
The Port Authority
He’s not as bad as Bush or Giuliani, but I don’t like him. He’s a rich guy who just cares about his Wall Street friends. One-percenter all the way; the city has gotten so corporate under him. He could be worse—at least Bloomberg actually acknowledges global warming and gun control—but good riddance. I hate to be cynical, but I don’t think de Blasio will be much better.
