If you’ve never visited the old Boiler Building, now the rather stunning post-industrial gallery space occupied by Smack Mellon, this installation by the Berlin-based American artist von Bergen might be a good occasion to do so. "Whip Lash" was conceived as a reaction to the towering ceilings, massive cement pillars and pristine white walls of the space, the eruption of some monstrous organic growth in this extremely artificial setting. Like the sentient TV in "Videodrome," von Bergen’s white wall bulges out into the gallery space, interrupting the clean order and recognizable gallery architecture with something decidedly alien and vaguely threatening.
