While the stodgy name implies otherwise, the vibe at La Carbonara isn't old New York Italian. No Frank on the juke, no red-and-white tablecloths, and nobody's grandmother manning the sauce pot. Still, La Carbonara offers full meals for more than fair prices, hopefully ushering in a new trend of budget-chic restaurants for these troubling economic times. Jeff Harris
