For the first time in my life I read Liz Smith’s New York Post column. It was so unrelentingly horrible it gave me pause. She’s an institution. So next time you feel a little disheartened by your anonymity or inability to “make it”, take solace in the fact that large swath’s of this and every other city’s population are spectacular morons.

Includes my cult favorite Reflections in a Golden Eye, a tragically flawed John Huston film co-starring Liz Taylor and appearing here with since unseen golden hued print of this Carson McCullers story about an army officer squirming under the weight of homosexual longing. November 7
The Fountainhead (Warners)
Laughably wooden performance from Gary Cooper in a laughably wooden film from laughably wooden author Ayn Rand who influenced a generation of conservatives who yielded and continue to yield power. Who’s laughing now? November 7
Fallen Idol (Criterion)
Carol Reed Graham Greene collaboration that’s the pick of the litter this issue. A boy suspects his beloved butler of murder in this thriller. November 7
