LE DISQUE REPORT

Your DVD Round-up with Phillippe Aghion

One of my great adopted pleasures in this city was reading the salmon-hued broadsheet New York Observer. But it was apparently losing too much money, and got bought by some young guy with a large inheritance. How many more good reasons for living here can possibly be choked into lifelessness by the sweaty palms of capitalism?

Private School (Universal)
Phoebe Cates (née Katz) was once the Jewess teenage ideal for high-schoolers; The Winona Ryder of the early 80s if you will.  March 6

Audrey Hepburn DVD Collection (Paramount)
For once they aren’t pawning off all the clunkers  — includes Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Roman Holiday and  Sabrina.  March 6.

Soviet Masterworks (Kino)
Two classics from the vaults: Commissar (1967) is a formerly banned film about Civil War-era anti-Semitism, and Quiet Flows the Don has been called the Soviet Gone With the Wind for those that like easy cultural comparatives.  March 6

Animated Soviet Propaganda (Kino)
41 propaganda films spanning 60 years. Wow.  March 6

Woman is The Future of Man (New Yorker)
Hong Sangsoo’s international festival smash hit. He’s been called the Asian Eric Rohmer (again for those with a need for a Western yardstick).  March 6

Borat ( I’m not according him the subtitle, enough is enough) (Fox).
Will this joke still be funny a year from now?  March 6

Hawaii Five-O: The Complete First Season (Paramount)
A seminal soundtrack album for a forgettable drama.  March 6
