A few weeks ago on the Jay Street platform of the F Train, I saw a cross-cultural incident that I’ve witnessed repeated several times in the last few months. A black man and a white woman were conversing and as they bid each other farewell, their hand gestures competed: he offering the “respect knuckles” fist, she the open-palmed handshake, so that her palm encompassed his closed fist — awkward but touching. Paper covers rock, tolerance covers misunderstanding.
