Matthew Dear’s 2012 release Beams hasn’t gotten quite the attention that its predecessor, the thick and sleazy Black City did. But it’s another piece of strong work from the New York City dance producer, full of dark grooves continually building with confident menace. Lately, it's been best to catch him live, where he’s grown into his role as a band leader with dapper, pompadoured panache.
