Even in his most recent large-scale paintings and drawings, Cline conveys an aura of nostalgia in street scenes and grotesques that suggest cities given over to self-destructive hedonism and desperation. At first almost impressionist in the sense of space and perspective he creates, each work becomes more surreal as new details and narratives emerge.
