We've gotten so used to seeing the Brooklyn-based artist's paintings and videos full of bright colors, plentiful glitter and an over-arching 70s blaxploitation movie aesthetic that this new work came as a big surprise. The pieces are much smaller and more numerous, the palette more subdued, and the imagery less elaborately set-and-costume-designed, with complex collages surrounding photo portraits.
