Investigating the boundaries between personal and public memories, historical events and contemporary remembrance, Seric-Shoba–informed in part by his experiences as a trench-digger in the Bosnian civil war–traveled around the world photographing legendary and infamous battlefields in their present states. So the site in Verdun is now a plowed field whose only signage indicates the nearest McDonald’s and Gallipoli is a postcard-perfect beach. The series comes full circle at the DAC, which is directly across the street from the place where George Washington and his troupes retreated after the Battle of Long Island.
