Never one to reel in his whims, Kevin Barnes takes a surprising, welcomed turn toward restraint on his band's 12th full-length, Lousy with Sylvianbriar, reestablishing himself as someone to root for. Though still ripe with metaphors, the songwriting here looks inward, becoming almost folky. It's the best we've heard from him in years. It'll be interesting to see how he and his band of merrymakers decide to translate it live—stone-faced seriousness doesn't seem like a possibility, but neither does riding in on a white horse. With Surface to Air Missive.
