Up next in "Adventures Deep into the Brooklyn Music Scene to Numb the Fact You Aren't at SXSW" is Old Monk, whose Facebook page describes them as "a trio of prog-punks." Listening now, that seems about right. They recall all the college-rock bands of the late 90s that are typically referenced whenever anyone plays upbeat, bright melodies, particularly toward those more earnest than ironic. Not to mention, there are prickly Vampire Weekend-like guitar runs and ample drum bashing. Let’s call them a noisier version of The Promise Ring?
