Opal Dream

Directed by Peter Cattaneo

Kellyanne, nine years old, is afflicted with a charming, if mildly disconcerting case of imaginary friends. Armed with a child’s determination, a too-sophisticated older brother, and a father who dreams of striking it rich mining for opals in small-town Australia, Kellyanne manages to make her town believe in her missing “friends” Pobby and Dingan. But the rest of us are left searching at the bottom of a jewel-bereft mine.
Peter Cattaneo (The Full Monty) gently cultivates the richness of the Australian outback’s opal mining region while concentrating on a family down on their luck, but big on imagination.  Best suited to the younger set of viewers,“opal dreams” are a far cry from the promise of a full monty from nerdy aspiring Chippendales. Spirits are kept high to the tunes of 90s pop, and although beefy miner Dad does bear his chest in some scenes, there’s little humor to go around, and for that matter, any sleeper movie magic.
Opens November 22
