In Zayd Dohrn's dark new comedy an American traveler recently arrived in Beijing falls for a young Chinese woman, but risks being Shanghaied if he doesn't navigate an obstacle course of cultural misunderstandings adroitly. In doing so he gradually appraises the many inequalities and bureaucracies that characterize contemporary China.
