Local trio Prince Rama had released several records before Animal Collective’s Avey Tare wandered into their SXSW show, eventually offering a record deal, production assistance, and buzz by association. For a band trafficking in deep psych drones and chanted sanskirt mantras, that shit helps. Now primed to reach a wider audience, their new album Shadow Temple isn’t much of a pop concession, but it’s got some compelling bits. Muted synth loops transmute the aura of ancient sentiment, and rumbling guitar flourishes only enhance the crazed devotional heft. These are still jams made for cult members, but, against all better judgment, that Kool—Aid is actually starting to look kind of tasty.
