While Alan Sparhawk & Co.’s Retribution Gospel Choir might take top billing (as they should, they’re pretty awesome), we'd like to encourage an on-time arrival tonight. Dave Hartley, perhaps best known for his basslines in The War on Drugs, has been working under the guise of Nightlands for a few years now, quietly perfecting the art of 70s Golden Age pop. His new album Oak Island takes the era's standards and inverts them in such a way that they seem sparse, twinkly and homespun.
