The ritualistic properties and functions of the works by 28 international artists brought together here vary immensely but many share certain traits: bold palettes, surreal figurative characters, roots in graffiti, and dark humor. German painter and sculptor Gabriel Dubois, for instance, creates pyramid-shaped totems crisscrossed by abstract friezes, and Japanese artist Twoone quotes religious symbolism from ancient Indian art and Japanese prints in his paintings of mystical animals.
