After Jennifer Aniston’s latest drama derailed at the box office, there might be another disappointment in store for her this holiday season with her latest comedy. Rumor Has It’s high concept plotline plays out on screen in a series of low moments with just a few glimmers of humor and humanity in Shirley MacLaine’s refreshing acerbity and Jennifer Aniston and Kevin Costner’s surprisingly magnetic connection that is sadly interrupted by romantic comedy clichés. Sarah (Aniston) finds out that her mother and grandmother had both slept with the same man Beau (Costner) whose love triangle was the basis for the book and film The Graduate. and therein lies the movie’s biggest problem: to use a revered film like The Graduate as a departure point, the movie needs to be in the same league as the original. where a The Freshman worked because it took a comedic look on the original, the earnestness of Rumor makes it a joke to watch, and unfortunately, at the filmmakers’ expense.
