Schoolboy Q, DJ Sliink

Wed., Oct. 16, 7 p.m. 2013; $20

The brightest blink in CMJ’s hip-hop programming this year is probably Schoolboy Q, de facto second in command for Kendrick Lamar’s Black Hippy rap collective. Q’s 2012 record, Habits & Contradictions, had a whiff of RZA’s weediest Wu-Tang productions. He’s been nursing its follow-up, Oxymoron, for a while, promising in interviews that it’ll be a more mature record that moves past gangland tough-guy morality tales to deal with his current reality as a respected artist, dedicated father, and full-grown man.
