Shabazz Palaces’ Black Up was probably the most acclaimed rap record released last year. It snuck up on a lot of folks, in part because its makers were initially sealed in a cloud of secrecy (which has never hurt growing interest). Once revealed as the latest project of Digable Planets’ Ishmael Butler, the material wasn’t entirely demystified or anything, but its place in a certain lineage of heady, jazz-inflected 90s hip-hop was spelled out in a neat A-to-B. One of the smarter things you could listen to while bowling this week, certainly.
