Some history: Smack Mellon, Dumbo’s foremost non-profit art space, is housed in the former steam plant that generated energy to power the surrounding factory buildings of Robert Gair, who invented and first manufactured corrugated cardboard boxes. The gallery has invited ten artists to create site-specific installations working with this unique architecture. Responses range from Janelle Iglesias’s invocation of steam power in her teapot sculpture, to Rob Swainston revealing historic bricks behind the gallery drywall.
