Surviving Eden

Directed by Greg Pritikin

Portly convenience store shlub Dennis Flotchky (Michael Panes in a horribly unrealistic fat suit) gets a shot at his 15 minutes when he reluctantly gets a spot on a reality show, Surviving Eden. While in the ‘garden’ he sheds 150 pounds, wins $1 million and even gets laid. What follows is Hollywood’s typical story of rise and fall, as Dennis squanders his prize money, snorts cocaine and alienates his roommate Sterno, played by the always excellent Peter Dinklage. Cheri Oteri co-stars as a contestant who cons Dennis by claiming to carry his baby.

Most of the action you’ve seen played out before, but there are some funny moments, especially between the show’s married producers played by Jane Lynch and Sam Robards. Mockumentary Eden explores the seamy underside of reality television, but fails to reveal anything remotely revelatory about it. And who wants to see a faux-documentary about fictional TV posing as reality anyways?
