Oberhofer—Time Capsules II Well, this has been a long time coming. Two years have passed since we featured Oberhofer as one of our Bands You Need to Hear in the 2010 edition of our annual feature, and in that time, principal member Brad Oberhofer has come into his own as a performer—clearly evidenced by his high-energy appearance on Letterman earlier this month—but also as a songwriter: Much of his acclaim, including the portion that came from us, has been based on one of the great ear-worms of recent indie rock, "Away Frm U," a track that's as propulsive and hook-laden as it is unpredictable and carefully arranged. It stands as an obvious highlight of Time Capsules II, but it's not exactly head and shoulders above the rest of the album—the quality is consistently high throughout, an immediately likable blend of guitars and keyboards with just enough AnCo worship present to be noticeable, but not enough for it to be problematic. Oberhofer (the person) is an admirably high-stakes kind of songwriter—there's not a lot of reliance on general vibes or atmosphere here, but an admirable wealth of ideas, of actual things that actually happen. It's a rare kind of record, one that manages to sound current and refreshing at the same time.
