Lillian Hellman’s controversial 1934 play about a lesbian scare at an all-girls school begins when a student who feels she’s being treated unjustly begins a rumor about two of her teachers. The puritan parents freak out (as is their wont) and headmasters come down hard. Meanwhile, one of the accused teachers confirms the rumor, threatening her relationship with her lifelong (nothing-more-than-a) friend.
