Removing context and isolating details, artists like Edward Mapplethorpe, Ellen Carey, Penelope Umbrico and Ilan Wolf explore different strands of abstract formalism. In this exhibition curated by Lyle Rexer, each artist introduces new nuances to the conventional description of photography as a documentary art form. Some work in color while others favor traditional monochrome, certain artists seek patterns and repetitions while others prize incomprehensible oddities.
