Duluka, the painfully catchy electro/indie band, opened up their Dumbo based recording studio to educate us about British rock star style. Shockingly, we learned that suitcases, pleather and little sleep usually result in looking the part, just no shorts allowed.
Overarching statement about your style?
Stevie: Sometimes we get fully clothed.
Robbie: We do have a set regime with hair straighteners and hair spray.
Ellie: As long as your hair look as good, everything follows.
Your hair does look pretty kempt.
Ellie: I cut all their hair. I did a little shave the other day. Its a cheap way of looking the part. When we're on the road or whatever, I'll just look at them and decide if we need a 'lil session.
Robbie: Sometimes we wake up in the morning and have a hair cut. Its fantastic.
So in addition to the midnight transformation, do you instill a strict uniform of leather and black?
Stevie: Pleather.
Ellie: I think so. You can't really go wrong with that. When your touring, black hides a multitude of sins, including dirt...and everything else...
Do you keep it hygienic on tour?
Stevie: We have a band bath.
Ellie: Its hard to maintain, but you adapt to the situation. For me, as long as I can do it in the van, its fine. We do smell alright.
Brooklyn hipster vs. UK hipster?
Kris: Similar. More beards, more three quarter length shorts and more bicycles.
Do you ever wear shorts?
Stevie: No, never worn shorts.
What about when you go swimming?
Robbie: Speedos, wetsuit.
Kris: Just the bottoms of the wetsuits.
Ellie: They're like a form of the skinny jean.
Robbie: Its the skinniest jean you can get.
You guys were forced to wear sunglasses because this was an 'early morning shoot.' Until what time is 'early morning'?
Stevie: Anything before 5pm.
Ellie: I like to go to bed late and wake up early. The longer your awake, the more you get done. Three hours is pretty standard in this band.
Tattoos?
Stevie: I'm waiting for the right tattoo to come along. I'm just gonna get really drink and then figure it out.
Ellie: I have a heart on the sleeve and star. I'm gonna add to it eventually...
Kris: I want an elaborate geometric shape, which I haven't found the right person to bestow the responsibility of yet. Its a series of dot matrix triangles.
Robbie: [pointing to blank scroll in a heart tattoo] I'm still trying to put someone's name in there.
