Following contemporary art’s swing-of-the-pendulum trend cycle, artists and curators increasingly embrace the recently frowned-upon designation “ornament,” as here, with curator John Rasmussen selecting 14 artists who adopt the term (in some cases to deconstruct it). Maha Saab, for instance, removes decontextualizes ornamental details to turn them absurd, if not downright ugly. Alina Szapocznikow’s sculptures, conversely, aggressively refuse to be contained by the fitting category of ornamentation.
