The latest Broadway revival of the “inspirational teacher” story that (re)invented the genre made headlines long before the first rehearsal, when advocate groups for actors with disabilities protested the casting of a non-deaf, non-blind actor in the role of Helen Keller (Abigail Breslin), and then applauded the casting of vision-impaired actor Kyra Ynez Siegel as Breslin’s understudy. For our part, we’re more irked by the fact that both lead actors, Breslin and Allison Pill as Annie Sullivan, are younger than us, further reducing the likelihood that we’ll abandon this whole journalism thing and dedicate our lives to that oh-so-lucrative acting thing.
