The Street Musicians Get Their Say

Erin

Where she plays:

Fort Greene Park

Instrument:

Alto Sax

I’ve been playing since childhood, sometimes in public, sometimes not. But the best part of playing in public is seeing folks really enjoy a tune. Even if only a few people come by, it still keeps me playing because you can’t really play indoors. As long as there is music, it is always a good day.

Gang

Where he plays:

Central Park

Instrument:

Erhu

I do not speak English much, but I like to play in park because it is quiet. People like to walk here. If people are here I can get money. I need money too.

Clintis

Where he plays:

14th Street Subway

Instrument:

Steel Drums

I have to answer quickly because I don’t like to stop playing. I have played for a long time. Actually my friend, I have played for a very long time. My favorite thing to play is ‘Raindrops and Roses’. That is my favorite song, so that is what I play.

Doug

Where he plays:

Atlantic-Pacific Subway

Instrument:

Guitar

Playing on the street is great because you don’t need to deal with booking at clubs etc. In the business environment everyone always needs to know what you’re doing. On the streets it’s like I am very stealthy. It’s like I am a guitar ninja. I can walk out of my house with a loaded six string on my back and rock out anywhere I want and not answer to anyone.

Thomas & Joel

Where they play:

Farmer’s Market Union Square

Instruments:

Fiddle, Banjo

(Thomas:) I’ve been busking in the Farmer’s Market for about ten years now, and I really feel like I am part of the atmosphere. A lot of the farmers appreciate it. The city canned having buskers in here last season because there were too many people playing, then they decided they wanted music back, but only a few people. Fortunately I got picked. The farmers are good people and I like to play for them. (Joel:) I’ve been playing clawhammer banjo for a few years here in New York and I met Tom at a jam session around town — there are a lot of jam sessions around — and he just called me up and said "let’s get together and do it." We enjoy playing together and this is a nice place to play.
