Thoughts On “Stop And Frisk”?

Just listen: you will never understand what it’s like to have cops focusing on you, or searching you in front of your women or your kids. It’s not like they suspect you of anything; they’re just doing it because they want you to know they can. They want to humiliate you and they do. Doesn’t matter that everyone you know knows it’s bullshit. And the people who say it lowers crime are the same people who say gun control doesn’t. Stop and frisk doesn’t do shit.

Hell, man, I’ve always been one of those “fuck da police” guys. Cops used to give me and my friends so much shit in high school, and they totally let that power go to their heads. I mean, Jesus, you hear about cops shooting unarmed guys, black guys, and it pisses you off. Same with the frisk shit—it’s just profiling that we shouldn’t stand for.

I worry a lot about crime and getting robbed. A lot of people have a lot of problems with the police here but I’d rather be safe than sorry, I guess. But I don’t know what it’s like to be stopped. I’ve never seen it happen on the street or anything. I have to go through shit pretty much every time I fly, and I hate that, so I guess I can sympathize.

People give the police too much shit. I know it sounds heartless to say “mistakes will happen,” but mistakes are going to happen, and everyone needs to stop obsessing every time some random cop does something stupid. People forget how much crime used to be in this city before Giuliani came in and cleaned things up. They had to be aggressive to do that, and now this city is as safe as anything. I think they should be respected for that, not condemned.
