Total Tribeca

Opening and Closing Night
The fest opens this year with the premiere of the Tina Fey fertility yukker Baby Mama, and closes with the premiere of the Wachowski Brothers’ already somewhat-maligned live-action Speed Racer adaptation. Baby Mama screens on 4/23 and opens on 4/25; Speed Racer screens on 5/3 and opens 5/9, so we’re not entirely sure that this is how you should spend your stimulus check. Still, famous people will presumably attend, if you like looking at them through a security detail.

The festival has selected 79 shorts — in and out of the competition for Narrative, Documentary and Student categories — screening in eleven feature-length programs, with seven shorts paired with features. Most notably, Green Porno, eight one-minute films about the sex lives of bugs, written and co-directed by Isabella Rossellini, screens before Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg, and in pieces throughout the fest.

Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival
Is synergy a sport? In any case, features in the regular program that involve the games people play are also a part of this sidebar, as is the premiere of David Mamet’s soon-to-be-released jiu-jitsu drama Redbelt.

Tribeca Drive-In
On April 24th, 25th and 26th, the fest screens family-friendly fare (including, on the final night, a football movie voted on by visitors to at the World Financial Center; doors at 6:30pm, pre-show programs at 7:30pm, movies at 8pm.

Tribeca Family Festival Street Fair
Good luck trying to drive on Greenwich St between Hubert and Duane Sts between 10am and 6pm on Saturday, May 3rd, as there will be live singing and dancing and puppeteering and stilt-walking and vendors and lots of children, all worth lots of points.

Tribeca Talks
In addition to your usual post-screening Q&As, the festival presents open-to-the-public panel discussions about filmmaking, and current topics and their cinematic treatments (including one panel featuring Bigger, Faster, Stronger director Christopher Bell and chief BALCO sleaze Victor Conte).

Tribeca/ASCAP Music Lounge
From April 29-May 2, the festival and another partner organization take over Canal Room to present Sondre Lerche, Regina Spektor, Nick Lowe and other movie stars.
