Why fuck with politics when you really just want to dance? So seems to be the new attitude in the Trans Am camp. After the Bush-bashing jams of 2004’s Liberation, the band took a long break, and pretty much started over. Using a new arsenal of borrowed instruments and international studios, Sex Change touches on all points in the trio’s seven-album history; thoroughly rocking through jams like ‘Conspiracy of the Gods’, getting their airy New Order atmospheric grooves on in the beautiful opener ‘First Words’, and of course continuing to delve into sleazy vocoder funk on numbers like ‘Climbing Up the Ladder’. The general vibe is a lot less harsh than some of their previous outings, and it’s a lot more fun, too. Trans Am has somehow been doing this for over a decade now, and Sex Change is triumphant proof that they are still the best at it. They may also be the only ones doing it.
