Stepping into one of Hegarty’s shows is like visiting a museum that has been shot up during an invasion, rattled by an earthquake and finally consumed by fire. No work of art, from historical paintings of George Washington to modern masterpieces by Rothko and invaluable furniture collections, is safe from her practice–don’t worry, they’re all replicas, we think… Some canvases, half burnt, still hang, while others lie peppered with bullet holes on the floor, and others still decomposed so long ago that their frames are growing back into trees.
