Waiting, a campy comedy set in a chain restaurant, has all the hallmarks of a genre spoof. It’s mindless, sarcastic and crude. Culty oddballs (Luis Guzman, Andy Milonakis) make off-character cameos and celebrity impostors play the leads (if you like Ben Affleck, you’ll looove Ryan Reynolds!).
Sounds familiar, right? But when’s the last time you saw a movie set in an Applebee’s? Yeah, same here. So what’s Waiting doing in the kitchen? Unfortunately, not much.
It has its moments, but two hours of dick jokes and 16-square feet of scrotum stand in their way. And you can’t bank on shock value in Fear Factor country. For god’s sake, our president stuck a cigar in some chubby Jewish chick’s vagina.
To borrow Waiting’s best line, after three Screams, three Scary Movies and 80 years of Leslie Nielsen, being the funniest new spoof is like being the smartest kid with Down’s syndrome. Save your babysitting money.
