The Lower East Side
I don’t want to use it. I don’t like bikes, and I don’t want to ride them. I think I learned when I was like, 10, but I don’t ride them anymore. If other people want them, that’s up to them, but I don’t care. But people have to know how to bike in this city. If they stick to their lanes, follow the rules, then fine. People can do what they want.
What do I think about them? I think, “we’ll see.” I don’t like bike riders in the city: they want to cut across intersections, they don’t stay in their lane, they go the wrong way down one-way streets. And those are the people who have good bikes—the ones who are more serious about it and probably know the law better. Citi Bike is a bunch of amateurs trying to bike because the subway is too busy, boo hoo. A lot of them don’t have helmets, and I guarantee you’re going to hear about someone getting hit by a car and dying while riding one. Or some genius will try to bike home late at night while drunk and get hurt. Regular bikers know not to do that stuff.
I had hoped that the bikes would mean less traffic, but that was probably stupid. I don’t know where all the cars come from in this city, but no one is trading their car in for a bike, I can tell you that. The bikes are probably a good idea. People who have used them seem to like them, and I drive by stations all the time that have people lining up. It never hurts for people to get more exercise. What are they going to do with them in the winter though?
I don’t really think about it. So far I haven’t seen many people riding them. I see a lot of stations filled with bikes but no one riding bikes. Where are the people riding bikes, Bloomberg? Maybe they’re riding in the park or along the water—that’s fine. For a while, I worried there would be fewer people taking cabs, but that hasn’t been an issue. You can’t bike with a family, or if you’re carrying a lot of stuff, and Wall Street guys don’t want to bike in their thousand-dollar suits. Those are the customers you get in a cab. The bikers wouldn’t be taking cabs otherwise.
