What Sports Are You Interested In?

For us, it begins and ends with netball — mainly for the skirts. We once tried to start an impromptu game of netball at the West 4th cage and we haven’t been back to the Village since. We also wish New York was a bit more like suburban Rotterdam.
DAVINA
Where she presides: Park Bar, Union Square
Favorite drink: Bourbon
My favorite sport is softball! I play in Brooklyn. It’s a co-ed team, a beer-drinking co-ed team. It’s a blast. We play in Prospect Park and travel around. It’s amazing.
DEREK
Where he presides: Almond Bar, Flatiron
Favorite drink: Laphroaig
I’m a roving lover. That’s my favorite sport. It’s the height of my physicality. I wouldn’t play other sports because I’m over 40, and I would take too long to repair. I do like to watch basketball.
NIKKI
Where she presides: Mumbles, Gramercy
Favorite drink: Stoli O and soda
I play pool, is that a sport? And golf. I golf at the Chelsea Piers. I’ve only been playing two years but it takes out the aggression. [Angry regular: “Hey the Knicks game started at seven, can we change the channel?” Nikki, not even looking up: “Eight actually.”] Yeah, I like to take out the aggression.
PATRICK
Where he presides: Charley-o’s, Times Square
Favorite drink: Tanqueray and tonic
Wait, what are you asking me? No, I don’t play any sports. They’re not my thing. This is the Theater District, buddy, so ask me anything about theater and I can answer that. You want to ask about sports? Wait until the other bartender comes. He does the sports.
LAWRENCE
Where he presides: Café Enduro, Prospect Park
Favorite drink: Beer
I swim, bike and dance. I also walk dogs. I bike mostly for transport. I swim about six times a week, doing laps. The swimming and biking are mostly to train me for the dancing; I’m a modern dancer by trade, and do yoga for that. I’m in a group, the IVY Baldwin Dance group. We have a show in March called Bear Crown at the DTW. Hey, are you going to plug my show? Great!
WILBUR
Where he presides: Iguana, Midtown
Favorite drink: Midroni
I don’t play anything, but I watch baseball. I’m a big baseball fan, a Yankees fan. I go to their games a lot, something like once a month, something like that. The best game I ever saw was between the Yankees and Florida. The end of the game was great — we were losing and then we came back right at the end.
