When you’re trudging through the oppressive heat of mid-July, the one thing you shouldn’t think about is August. Instead, we seek shelter in two great air-conditioned, cold-beverage-serving cultural institutions: the tavern and the multiplex. The ticket-taker at our local cinematorium couldn’t recommend any bars, since he wasn’t old enough to drink, so we asked some bartenders what movies they like instead.
Where he presides: Jake’s Saloon, Chelsea Favorite drink: Guinness and Jameson rocks Hot Fuzz. Did you ever see Shaun of the Dead? It blows that out of the water, and that’s one of my favorite movies. It’s just hilarious, man. Good British humor. That’s something you can go see in the theater. I mean, I have a whole bunch of old movies (I could pick), but I’d rather do something new. It’s retardedly funny.
Where she presides: 68 Jay, DUMBO Favorite drink: Wine, any kind
Snatch. It’s hysterical. I don’t know if it’s a summer movie, but it’s a movie that makes me laugh. Especially the dog eating the squeaky toy. [The dog eats the what now?] The dog eats this squeaky toy and then from there on out, he doesn’t bark, he squeaks. And Brad Pitt doesn’t speak clearly — he’s a gypsy — so he’s like, very… yeah. I don’t know, I like it a lot.
Where he presides: The Four-Faced Liar, West Village Favorite drink: Wild Turkey, neat
Ooh, lemme think about that… Oh, Weekend at Bernie’s. I remember I was probably in junior high when that came out. It’s got the whole, you know, Long Island, going-to-a-Hamptons-party-with-rich-people thing. That really captured my imagination. So many crazy parties and all those people out there. That’s pretty much how summer is in New York, too. Everybody gets all uptight. Right around July 4th, everyone just snaps.
Where he presides: Iggy’s, Lower East Side Favorite drink: Bourbon Das Boot. It’s underwater — come on. I don’t go to the movies much. Seats are too small. Can’t press stop, can’t smoke. I haven’t been to the movies in about 15 years.
Where he presides: Jack O’Neill’s, Greenpoint Favorite drink: Guinness Betty Blue. It’s French. It’s a French summer movie. It’s got a lot of sex — can’t quote me on that. It’s about a man and a woman and a steamy, hot relationship in the summertime in the south of France. The music is wonderful, the cinematography’s amazing, and the story is just out of this world. It’s pure French. [It’s something you relate to?] Oh, definitely. I’ve had so many particular experiences….
