The line “When I got better from the mumps, yes, my swollen nut and neck shrunk” plows through a simple piano melody and hymn-like humming to open Mumps, Etc., the first album in three years from hip-hoppers-turned-folkies WHY?—an early indicator of what sort of weirdness this one brings. (A lot.) Per usual, frontman Yoni Wolf twists words so they teeter between jokes and uncomfortably intimate confessions, rising and falling between hip-hop rhythms and more traditional folk infrastructures along the way. By all logical accounts, it shouldn't sound as good as it actually does.
