William Helmreich, the New York Nobody Knows

Sat., Oct. 5, 5 p.m. 2013
William Helmreich, a professor of sociology at the City College of New York, embarked on a seemingly impossible challenge: walking every block in all five boroughs of New York City, a journey of 6,000 miles that took four years to complete. Along the way, he met and interviewed hundreds of New Yorkers about their daily lives and personal histories. The resulting book, The New York Nobody Knows, presents an ethnographic study of people from all backgrounds and walks of life who call New York City home. Meet Helmreich at Word, where he'll discuss some of the fascinating things he learned and found in North Brooklyn. Afterward, join him on a walking tour of the neighborhood.
