The central conceit of You, Me and Dupree is that everyone supposedly knows a guy who refuses to get married, who’d rather remain a single slacker. Owen Wilson’s Randolph Dupree is that guy. Suddenly homeless after his best friend (Matt Dillon) ties the knot, Dupree moves in with the newlyweds and creates holy havoc in their household.
Wilson’s shaggy-haired overgrown doofus has become a Hollywood staple and cliché. He has his moments, but mostly coasts through this bland exercise directed by the brother team known for TV’s Arrested Development.
While Dillon will probably play straight men like Carl until he’s 70, Kate Hudson – the spunky spawn of Goldie Hawn –hasn’t really challenged herself since Almost Famous. Portraying the harried bride Molly is beneath her estimable talents.
Neatly wrapped up with a bow, You, Me and Dupree offers something old and something borrowed, but nothing new.
