Who’s Your Favorite Artist?

We once knew a man who said he was looking for “an Andrew Wyeth woman in an Edward Hopper setting.” Not sure if he ever found what he was looking for, but it certainly got us interested in painting. As for us, well, we may know art, but we sure as hell don’t know what we like.

Monet. This year it’s definitely Monet. Previous years, maybe Picasso, somebody like that. This year I like the old Impressionists though. I’ll go with Monet. I also like hard rock music. This is Bush on the radio here. ‘Machine Head’. I also like Janis Joplin. I’m a big fan of Janis Joplin. I have some Janis Joplin CDs in the glove box. You want to hear some? That poor woman mixed too much alcohol and drugs. But she was an artist. That’s what a lot of artists tend to do.

Van Gogh. He was not doing his best work until he was older. I like that. The paintings are wonderful. I don’t know much about art though.

I really don’t have any idea about artists here. I am from Bangladesh. I know some of the Bangladeshi artists. There, the best is named Zainul Abedin. He’s more than 80 years old; actually he has died, but he is the best there, nobody beats him. He made statues. But here you have many more artists. In Bangladesh you have I think, one, two art schools for the entire country. Here I drive around and everywhere I see School of Visual Arts, Art Institute — there are many schools.

I don’t have any favorite artists. We have some well-known artists where I am from, but I’m not really interested in it. How about Kofi Annan, though? He is from my country.

No favorite. I’m too busy with the cab. No time for artists. I’m sorry.
