No one thought it would be quite like this. The King of Pop had long ago taken himself out of the public eye and, as Mike Conklin writes, for many it seemed like he was already dead. But then he really died, and the entire world remembered what it was that made him the most iconic musician of the 20th century: the preternatural talent, the alien vulnerability, the fairytale (or nightmare) metamorphosis from sweet-faced prodigy to ghoulish recluse; Google, Twitter, YouTube, all came close to collapsing under our collective need to remember the genius that preceded the fall. And though it’s tempting to spend the entire day just watching all those amazing clips from the 70s and 80s, we’ve tried to remember him in the most honest way possible, celebrating the good, recognizing the bad, and marveling at the weird.
