This year’s Literary Upstart: The Search for Pocket Fiction, the fifth annual installment of The L’s short fiction competition and reading series, saw us receive nearly 450 submissions, from which we invited 13 readers to three semifinal readings at The Slipper Room, to read in front of enthusiastic capacity crowds and our judging panel, comprised of acid-tongued literary insiders. At the finals on July 9th, Deenah Vollmer, our wild card finalist, was crowned the winner; the three other finalists, our semifinal winners, were Ellen Killoran, Angela Lovell and Christian Rose.

Grand Prize Winner: “Trevor’s Balls,” by Deenah Vollmer

Runners Up: “Clara, Look at Me Now,” by Ellen Killoran | “Ps and Qs,” by Angela Lovell | “A Good Place to Get Drunk,” by Christian Rose
