“Very normal people do extraordinarily fucked-up things.” Or so says May Adrales while talking about the latest play she’s directing here in the city. It’s a production of The Bereaved, a new play by young, provocative playwright Thomas Bradshaw. Adrales has been working for while now with Bradshaw on The Bereaved—a tale of unexpected death and falling from grace—at the Lark Play Development Center. There she helps to run a number of programs that support the work of new writers. She’s also as a mentee of producing director John Clinton Eisner, under the aegis of a Theatre Communications Group Next Generations grant—one of innumerable fellowships that she has been awarded in her short career.
What seems to be bringing all the respect so early? Her ability to strip her productions down to the essentials, to let the language and the “melody of the play” drive her, and a particular ability to manipulate the tension in the work she chooses, keeping her audiences guessing throughout. The Bereaved is likely to be an exciting show for a number of reasons, not least of which is to see it in the hands of May Adrales.
