ArtReviews Power 100 list for 2009

The art world’s foremost list, the ArtReview Power 100, was released today, and many of this year’s newcomers and biggest climbers in the index of influence and importance are curators and gallerists. After being topped by Damien Hirst last year (now #48), this year’s Top 5 is full of museum directors and curators: Hans Ulrich Obrist, the director of London’s Serpentine Gallery took number one; Glenn D. Lowry, director of MoMA at number two; Tate director and Turner Prize jury chairman Sir Nicholas Serota came in third; the curator of the 2009 Venice Biennale and rector of Frankfurt’s Staedelschule Daniel Birnbaum placed fourth; and Larry Gagosian of the eponymous gallery empire rounded out the top 5.

Other notable features of this year’s list: the highest ranked artist is Bruce Nauman at number 10 followed by Jeff Koons at 13; the highest-ranking critic is the New York TimesRoberta Smith at 61; and Glenn Beck (him?) snuck his way in there at number 100 for his very public and very regular assertions that he doesn’t get art.
