Good news for people who love underrated indie-rock bands that sound like the Beatles. Miles Kurosky, former frontman of Beulah, will release The Desert of Shallow Effects via Majordomo Records on March 9th, with the promise of a national tour to follow. For the record, Beulah was the most underappreciated indie-rock band ever. (Fun anecdote for my Mom to read: One of the first articles I ever wrote for my college newspaper began with the line, “When my boyfriend and I broke up, it hurt; when Beulah broke up, it nearly killed me,” so I’m sorta having a moment right now.) With Kurosky’s slightly smug vocals leading the band through lushly orchestrated Beatlesque melodies over the span of four albums, they became masterminds of 60s-inspired pop. Shortly after they broke up in 2004, there were rumors that Kurosky was working on a solo project, one that would enlist most of Beulah to lend a hand as guest musicians, but a series of hospital visits for reconstructive shoulder surgery and kidney problems kept getting in the way of things. If the two songs posted here are any indication though, it seems worth the wait.
