Jim Inhofe Says “I Believe in Racial and Ethnic Profiling,” Has Clearly Never Seen Battle of Algiers

  • Is this woman brown enough to frisk?

Climate change-denying homophobe Jim Inhofe, who is America’s worst senator—worse than segregationist Jeff Sessions and Christ’s Capitalist Jim DeMint and flag-wrapped pedophile Saxby Chambliss! Worse than hypocrite Tom Coburn! Worse than diaperman David Vitter! Worse than Jim Bunning!—spoke today at the Senate Armed Services Committee’s hearings on the Fort Hood shootings. “I know it’s not politically correct to say it,” the Senator from Oklahoma said, riskily but defiantly proclaiming his deeply unpopular anti-Muslim beliefs, “I believe in racial and ethnic profiling.” He continued:

I think if you’re looking at people getting on an airplane and you have X amount of resources to get into it… You get at the targets, and not my wife… But when you hear that not all Middle Easterners or Muslims between the age of 20 and 35 are terrorists, but all terrorists are Muslims or Middle Easterners between the age of 20 and 35, that’s by and large true.

(Inhofe neglected to clarify whether he believes Muslims constitute a “race,” or an “ethnicity.”)

In The Battle of Algiers, the FLN (Algeria’s National Liberation Front) gets bombers through French security checkpoints by picking three light-skinned women, and decking them out in Western-style hair and makeup. While the more traditionally garbed pied noirs are being searched, they pass right through and bomb cafes.

Questions of the efficacy of racial profiling aside, Jim Inhofe is a racist who would create a second class of American citizens, also.

  • Funny how homosexuals disagree on everything a politician says, once they find out he doesn’t plan on giving any special benefits to homosexuals.

  • The United States is at war with Islamic extremists, not your typical nation-state actors. If we were at war with say, a group of Russian anarchists who had a history of hijacking airplanes, would it be fair to screen Russian citizens before they boarded a plane bound for America?
Of course it would be–we already screen before giving visas; this would simply be a measure of upgraded security. Furthermore, would it be fair if they were subjected to screening on all domestic flights, once in the US? Most people would agree that it would be completely fair, as it could be part of their visa’s terms.

This works perfectly well for nation-states. When we start talking about religious and ethnic groups, we can follow the same logical standards, yet we don’t, all in the name of political correctness.

Why is it fair for the US to enact extra security measures for passengers arriving from certain foreign countries (not to mention banning air traffic to some areas completely), yet unfair to do so for flights within the United States?

  • For one thing, “most people,” in my experience, find extra screenings by nationality pretty problematic too, so that’s something of a false dichotomy you’ve created.

But anyway, just because we’re not at war with a state doesn’t mean we have no idea where the threat is coming from–in fact, knowing someone’s associates and educational history and family ties and travel history (all of which would ideally be processed going into international flights if there was any interagency cooperation) is actually a far more effective and efficient way of enforcing security than making all the brown- or Russian-looking people get in a line.

But if you really think this is about “political correctness,” like we’re just afraid of *offending* people, and not about what systematically roping off different sections of the population says about our society to ourselves and to the world, I kind of suspect that there was more than a little bit of faux to your naivete.

  • A very interesting about ethnic profiling in America is told in “Still MOnets: A Story aout Forbiden pictures and faded dreams” by ZIghen Aym. Visit http://www.zighenaym.com
