There are many funny/terrible things in this Times article on federal and state gun legislation in the Obama years. Here are some of them:
-State legislatures in Virginia, especially, are rushing full-speed ahead to loosen gun control. Virginia will soon allow people to carry concealed weapons in establishments that serve alcohol, and repealed long-standing ban on purchasing more than one handgun a month; Arizona and Wyoming are considering allowing people to carry concealed weapons without permits; Montana and Tennessee approved in-state loopholes to federal gun control regulation. (States’ rights!)
-Obama, meanwhile, has “has failed to deliver on campaign promises to close a loophole that allows unlicensed dealers at gun shows to sell firearms without background checks; to revive the assault weapons ban; and to push states to release data about guns used in crimes.” He also signed bills with riders permitting guns into national parks and luggage on Amtrak. An administration official, reached for comment, offered the most tepid bolierplate “the president remains committed…”-type statement you can imagine.
-Still, the NRA doesn’t trust him! “We have had some successes, but we know that the first chance Obama gets, he will pounce on us,” said the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre.
In conclusion, America is stockpiling weapons, to defend its weapons stockpile, from the imminent incursion of our incredibly deferential commander-in-chief.
