We’re just a few short days away from the onset of Pavement hysteria around here, and part of it, in addition to the Waterfront show and all those Central Park shows, is an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. For that appearance (and that appearance only, thank god), the band will be joined on stage and on television by the winner of the Play Guitar With Pavement contest currently going on. The band has narrowed it down to five finalists, and now it’s up to you to vote for whichever one you think is the most/least embarrassing, depending on what you’re looking to get out of this. My prediction is that Kristina S., the only female finalist, will win going away, because of the extent to which all the dudes who love Pavement will be jealous of the male contestants. And aside from maybe Stjepan P., who does a fine job with “You Are a Light” and doesn’t really seem to be an asshole, she might actually be the least irritating of the bunch, even despite her stupid sunglasses There’s the weird, tone-deaf creepster guy, the kid wearing the Velvet Underground shirt even though he probably never saw the Velvet Underground, and then bathtub guy, who certainly looks the part but whose calculated quirkiness is simply insufferable. This is not going to end well for anyone.
Voted for Kristina S (repeatedly- twice!), I think she is the embodiment of Pavement spirit, the way she sings oh my god, oh my god, OH MY God, that just sends waves of bliss across my face.
Other dudes are horrible, the guy with the cream strat, dude this is Pavement, not Jimmy Hendrix tribute, and Stjepan is trying way too hard, the way he keeps on looking down on the fretboard.
