David Wojnarowiczs film A Fire in My Belly, A Work in Progress on view at the New Museum

In a press release sent out yesterday evening, the New Museum announced that it will be showing David Wojnarowicz’s film A Fire in My Belly, A Work in Progress (1986-87) in both its thirteen- and seven-minute versions in its lobby, following last week’s controversial censorship of the piece at Washington D.C.’s National Portrait Gallery. The pieces will be screening in the Bowery museum’s lobby, where visitors can see them without paying admission. In the press release museum director Lisa Phillips writes: “The New Museum has always defended freedom of expression and continues to oppose censorship. We cannot afford to take hard won civil liberties for granted and need to remain vigilant and protect artistic freedom.” A Fire in My Belly will be on view through January 23.
